Monster Hunter World Iceborne Weapon Design Contest
Published 1:32 PM EDT May 10, 2019The new monsters of Monster Hunter World Iceborne are cool and all — pun so totally intended. I mean, where else can you find a rabbit-dinosaur-moose monster? One of the biggest announcements from Thursday’s Monster Hunter World developer update, however, involve the expansion’s new hunter actions, which introduce changes in the game’s slinger mechanics and add new custom mods to boot. Not only do these changes provide even more quality of life improvements to the game. They also change and redefine how the game will be played moving forward. Here’s a list of some of the key gameplay revelations from the Monster Hunter World Spring Developer Update: Slinger can now be used while your weapon is unsheathedPrior to Iceborne, using the slinger required hunters to sheathe their weapon unless they’re using the Sword and Shield. Monster Hunter World’s first “massive DLC expansion,” however, changes all that. Starting with Iceborne, hunters can now use the slinger even while their weapon is drawn out, opening up several potential avenues for slinger use in the game.
CapcomWhile the slinger was introduced with much fanfare in Monster Hunter World — particularly its synergy with the game’s environs — its use is pretty situational and doesn’t quite flow smoothly with the game’s combat. It appears that MHW’s developers, however, really want to encourage more usage of the tool. The slinger’s incorporation into the Ancient Leshen battle from the Witcher crossover serves as a good example.Iceborne further adds to that by making it even easier to use the slinger for all weapons. Being able to use slinger ammo with your weapon drawn opens up new combos that further incorporate the tool with the various weapons’ movesets. This includes a new feature called the power shot, which lets you fire a shorter-range but more powerful slinger attack that can flinch or topple a monster. This makes it easier for folks who use, say, a Great Sword to land the super slow True Charge.
Dual Blades can also launch a power shot while evading. Slinger gets clutch. ClawOne new addition to the slinger is a monster-grappling feature “clutch claw.”The clutch claw allows hunters to use the slinger to attach themselves to the side of a monster sort of like the Switch Axe’s special move. Once attached, you can do certain things:. Redirecting monsters: You can force monsters to go a certain way or direction as they try to shake you off. This opens up additional strategic options like, say, guiding a Diablos toward a special wall to get its horns stuck or any large monster toward a trap to hold it in place.
Flinch shot: Lets you unload all your slinger ammo in one go while you’re attached to a monster’s head to make it flinch or topple.Weapons like the Dual Blades can also add the clutch claw into a combo allowing them to use it more easily. New custom modsAnother additional feature coming to Iceborne are new custom mods. One specific mod shown in the developer update video involves the light bowgun, which should please gunners.More: Kjarr Blitz Thunder builds vs. AT Kulve Taroth, other monstersThis specific mod allows hunters to automatically reload their weapon after doing two evades.
It actually reminds me a bit of Seregios’ armor skill as well as some of the hunter styles from Monster Hunter Generations and MHG Ultimate, which I thought were pretty fun as a bowgun main.At its lowest level, this particular custom mod will let you reload one round after two evades. Equip more of the mods, however, and you can reload even more shells at one time, allowing you to attack more aggressively. Potential concernsWhile these new features sound neat, they also raise some concerns. The ability to use slingers without sheathing, for example, makes the Sword and Shield feel less unique. I’m not sure what the latest weapon usage stats are but SnS is one of those weapons that historically doesn’t see as much use.

Hopefully, they’ve added more new features to this particular weapon class to balance out the new change with the slingers.Another concern is that the changes further tilts the game’s balance in favor of hunters. As much as I love Monster Hunter World — I gave it a 10 out of 10 and picked it as my game of the year for 2018 — a lot of the quality of life changes also made it arguably the easiest Monster Hunter game overall. Some of the additional mechanics being introduced give hunters even more tools to flinch monsters and hold them in place. The end of the trailer also showed a Palico reviving a fallen hunter, which is great for super tough fights but might be seen by some old-school purists as a crutch. As such, I’m hoping that the G-Rank, er, Master Rank monsters (sorry, old habits die hard) provide a better challenge to help balance that stuff out. And by better I mean a difficult ye fair challenge and not something cheap. All that being said, I can’t wait to jump into Iceborne in the fall and take part in a new Monster Hunter World experience.
As someone who has Platinumed the game and invested more than 700 hours in it, the experience is starting to lose some of its luster so it would be great to dive into the game anew and experience it fresh once again. The Monster Hunter World Iceborne expansion is scheduled for release this September on consoles and at a later date for PC.
